It's The Holiday Season: How Can I Keep From Relapsing?

methadone centers in chicago

The holiday season may be the most wonderful time of the year for some folks, but when you're suffering from heroin addiction, it can involve more stress than joy to the world. And as any heroin addict knows all too well, arranging travel and family get-togethers while in active addiction can be a complete nightmare.

For those with close family ties, the intense family-time can be emotional. For those without close family ties, the holidays can be a time of loneliness.

While you don't need alcohol or drugs to make your holiday season one to remember (or forget), it can be challenging to manage your addiction at this time of year. That said, here are a few ways you can avoid a relapse this holiday season.

  1. If it'll cause you too much stress, don't go! Many folks see the holidays as required family time, but the truth is that if visiting your family causes you more stress than joy, then maybe it's best not to go. Remember: it's not selfish to put your recovery first. In fact, it might be the best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones this year.

  2. Visit only for a short while. If visiting your family causes stress, but you absolutely need to visit them, consider only visiting for a short while. Set a timer for yourself. Once you've reached your set time, give yourself permission to leave.

  3. Start each day with a plan. A relapse can be a threat if you don't have an action plan to fend one off. Come up with a plan every day so you know what to do when a craving hits you. Keep in mind your plans for the day, how they might impact you, and how you can handle them.

  4. Bring along food and drinks you enjoy. Bring your own food and drinks to a holiday party if you're worried there won't be beverages or food you can enjoy.

  5. Make a medication plan. Many heroin addicts have been able to reclaim their lives through the use of medications such as Methadone and Suboxone. Of course, running out of these medications while traveling can be disastrous. Before you make travel plans, consult with your physician or methadone treatment center about the best course of action. Your provider will be able to help you come up with travel plans that don't compromise your sobriety.

Don't beat yourself up if you do relapse

Addiction is a disease and not every person recovering will recover easily. In fact, it's safe to say that recovery is never easy, especially around the holidays. If you do relapse, remember that that doesn't completely erase all of the important progress you've made.

Instead, get the help you need at your local methadone rehab center so you can get back on track to recovery.
